We are what we eat.

Many of us are concerned about how animals are raised and about how healthy their meat is.  Animals that are raised on pasture are raised in ideal conditions. This is a very old way of raising animals that is coming back. What does this mean for you and me? Here is well known Islander Darren Peters who gives us his answer to that question.

This is what Raymond is doing at his farm.

His cows will feed outside for most of the year and when this is not possible will eat forage and hay.

This is what cows are designed to do. The result for us is a meat that is high in Omega 3’s. Grain fed beef has much higher levels of Omega 6’s.

The pigs and hens will also forage outside.

The key to the system is the pasture. In this approach, the animals rotate on the grass and take and offer their own part of the system.

The pasture system is small now. Back in 2000 no one was doing this. But as people have understood the health and ethical benefits it is growing at 100% a year. If you would like to know more about this movement then this link will tell you a lot more.
